And as usual, Penny was a couple of strokes upon me. She had decent length off the tee while I hit it a ton but never straight. Our usual sib-talk was rather muted. When she was up, Penny usually gave me trash-mouth. But today she was extremely quiet. I gave her space and didn’t press the issue. On the par 3 eighth she finally broke down.
“Gary, what’s video chat client with me?” she asked.
“I can’t see too much wrong today, Pen You’re kicking my butt,” I replied.
“Darn it, don’t be an idiot. Not my golf game. I mean me. What’s wrong with me?”
“You? Who says there’s anything wrong with you? There’s nothing wrong with you. You’re perfect.” As soon as those words left my mouth, I swallowed hard and starred at the ground. I could feel the heat rising up my face as abject embarrassment hit me. “I mean, uh, well…”
Penny looked at me closely. “Just what do you mean?”
“Look, tell me what’s bothering you and maybe I can help,” I said quickly, trying for a way out of this mess.
Penny pushed her cart toward the green and I followed. Her head hung low and she didn’t have the same jaunty step teen chat lines old. As we reached the green, she turned to me. “Do you mind if we just pick up? I really don’t want to finish.” This was so totally out of context for her I thought I was hearing things.
